New Delhi: Joe Root is poised to make his comeback to One-Day Internationals as England unveils its 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. England has taken the lead as the first nation to announce their squad before the official schedule release. Root has had a standout year in Tests, accumulating 1556 runs in 31 innings, the most by any batter in 2024. This year, Root has emerged as England's leading run-scorer and the player with the most centuries in Test cricket.

The 33-year-old former England captain has not participated in an ODI match for over a year, with his most recent 50-over international appearance coming against Pakistan in Kolkata during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Ben Stokes, who came out of ODI retirement to play in the World Cup, has been left out of the Champions Trophy squad. The red-ball captain is currently unavailable due to a hamstring injury he sustained during the third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.
